The Hollywood Beach Mermaid Artificial Reef, a collaboration between the Ocean Rescue Alliance (ORA) and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), has brought a touch of magic to Broward County’s coast. This innovative project marks the deployment of 20 ocean-friendly artificial reef modules, constituting the first of its kind in the county, off the shores of Hollywood Beach.
This endeavor represents the second artificial reef project undertaken by the Ocean Rescue Alliance, contributing to a total of 100 artificial reef structures installed along South Florida’s coastline since the initiation of the 1000 Mermaids project five years ago.
Among the 20 reef structures, five feature captivating artistic sculptures, including mermaids, a selfie mermaid tail, and an industrial diver suit.
Situated approximately one mile offshore in waters ranging from 35 to 40 feet deep, the reef presents an exciting opportunity for certified divers to explore its depths via vessel access.
Additionally, plans are in progress for a future reef installation aimed at providing accessibility to snorkelers from the shore.
The 1000 Mermaids project is a remarkable public eco-art initiative, serving as an underwater haven for coral restoration, eco-tourism, and scientific research. Each artificial reef sculpture, weighing between 2200 to 3300 lbs, is equipped with the patented “Coral Lok” system, facilitating the direct attachment of coral fragments. Manufactured by Reef Cells in Boynton Beach, these structures feature biological bases engineered to foster fish habitat and support coral growth, making them prime locations for coral transplantation efforts.
Located just a few miles southeast of the Port Everglades Inlet, the Hollywood Beach Mermaid Artificial Reef promises to be a focal point for marine life and conservation endeavor.
